The Liberia International Airport is more of a open air wharehouse with nightclub style security. That's Brandon on the left looking like a bearded terrorist.
We took a taxi to La Fortuna. The drive around Lake Arenal was beautiful.
After checking into our hostel we went straight to dinner. Our first real meal of the day. This is a typical Costa Rican plate: Meat, rice, beans, slaw, mashed potatoes, and fried plantains.
La Fortuna sits at the base of Arenal Volcano, shrouded in clouds below.

Love these. Looking forward to more of the volcano.
Hello! I found your blog while searching for info on the trip from Liberia to La Fortuna/Arenal. Thanks for posting this! I'm taking the same trip next month and was wondering how much the taxi ride from Liberia to La Fortuna was?
Thanks again - I definitely appreciate your help!
Hi Valerie,
Glad you liked the post. I did a lot of them from Costa Rica. I didn't find out until we arrived, but most people don't travel from Liberia to La Fortuna--they go from San Jose. It's much cheaper too.
We arrived too late to take the bus, or I should say series of buses. It takes all day and is a little complicated. You would be giving up time in order to save money.
Rather than spend the night in Liberia and take the bus the next day, we opted for a taxi. $150 (or $75 each) It's a really long drive and the roads aren't great. That was the price after we talked them down.
They have shuttles too, but you'd have to reserve in advance. Not sure how much that would save you.
Hope that helps. If you have more questions, feel free to email me at supercords @ yahoo
